BANNED! the GRUM post.

Well I am kinda shocked, I got an email from GRUM's Management this morning threatening action at my post of my freebie Grum cd's,
in fact it was........One track .. only one
I posted one track on here. Now here is the thing, i posted one track
you get the picture ONE TRACK!! coughs.
they seem to think that i posted all of em.. now here on Culture Bread, i only
post tracks that are either sanctioned on other sites as a promo, or i post
third party remixes, the track in question was a remix, and i posted it
because i feel they are a great band and you should have the right to download
ONE track and then go and buy other stuff from them,
when you are next ready to buy a
new cd/download. I really thought I was acting in the bands best interests.

But the powers that be.. ie: Sarah Bowden, their manager, has asked that

i take down the offending track.. and i will.

Ohh the bummer .. that is a person trying to introduce new music, to likeminded people.. has taken a hit to the head.

I'm pretty shocked at this as it goes...it seems really petty when you really just want to share a new band with people, it IS doing them a favour...I suspect the band won't mind as much as management, the band may not even know about it...have you considered trying to contact them direct?

I think since you are not making any money from this and are offering to spread the word...they should stop the legal action and offer a way to assist outsiders in advertising their band. you are in fact saving them money...in some ways...free advertising is the best you can get!

I sincerely hope they don't push on this, it's really silly.

Sounds like bad management to me. Less well known acts can really benefit from your type of exposure, I can't see how a bit of publicity is going to affect their sales figures. Especially as it was a frickin remix!

Hi, doubt they will take legal action now you've taken it down. Sounds like a knee jerk reaction, management maybe not doing too well in the "economic climate"? lol. Maybe write a letter to the band explaining who you are and what you're about if you want to represent. Be good to find out where you stand on this issue at least. Good luck!

- I meant *adversely* affect their sales figures, obviously!

to be honest i really am thinking of posting the track anyway.. out of protest.

I will support your protest...I think...considering what you've told me...you have the right to stream this...as so many other have done. it's important to challenge this.

how ridiculous!!! The whole copyright thing is insane. The French Govt's '3 strikes an yer out' department are down to 2 as they used a copyrighted font in their logo and didn't get permission :)

And EMI recently banned 'OK Go' fans embedding YouTube vids anywhere - despite them being made famous by......being on YouTube!!! see here - http://tinyurl.com/yafotjs

This is Grum's manager. I didn't, as Mark claims in his post above, threaten ANY action, and I wrote to him asking why he would lie in this way. To be clear, I asked him to remove the free download, and put up a stream instead. Perhaps he, along with many people don't appreciate what a huge amount of money it costs Grum to make these remixes and tracks. Unfortunately until someone up high decides what to do about the problem of free downloads for musicians, we are left having to ask people (politely I might add) to take them down, so Grum has a chance to repay his label for helping him do what he loves most.

this could run and run, but at the end of the day.. i am a fan .. and i want to broadcast that fact.. and btw GRUM manager i actually put a grum track on my "disco september" blog .. which had a great response.. it is all about money i spose.. but i make no money.. or try to make any money.. i am just a music fan. And adore bands that make music.

let it stop cos i may harm GRUM in the long run.

Eddie Spex said...

ooh and btw .. you did threaten legal action

vonnie_whinging_pom said...

I may be biased...but it sounds to me like you did the right thing Eddie Spex...in every sense and at every turn. I think someone may have their posh expensive knickers in a knot!

the point about EMI and Ok GO/youtube...perfect example. very nicely put DIL23...we live in an age where it's nigh on impossible to police all forms of music sharing...but the sharing part of that sentence should really be the key...

You are a liar, and I am going on record (for the second time as I see you deleted my last message) so that everyone that reads your blog knows what kind of a person is behind it. I did not threaten legal action. I politely asked you to stream the track.
If you wish to insist that I did, then I would ask that you send me the email by return where I suggested such a thing. I would also really recommend that your readers look elsewhere, to better blogs, run by people with integrity.

I think this has gone ALL OUT OF PREPORTION.. maybe my email to the management will suffice.. if all goes tit's up
then i will not reply.. all ends that ends well.

You can't just give artists music away for free. What do you expect? If everyone did that there would be no music for us to listen too. Just stop moaning and stream it instead.

Would just like to add that I am in the music biz and can say from first hand experience that grum's manager is a c**t of the highest order which can clearly be seen in the above exchange
